5 Motivational Phrases That Are Frauds

With all of the motivational phrases floating around, there are bound to be a few that have serious flaws. Of course the intention is good - but perhaps the quotes have been taken out of context, or they do not necessarily convey the intended message.

Here are five motivational phrases that miss the mark:

"Success is dependent on the glands - sweat glands." - Zig Ziglar. Now, Zig Ziglar is one of the master motivational speakers of our time. What he meant was that hard work leads to success. It does indeed, but success doesn't depend solely, or even primarily, on hard work. There are many other components including attitude, perseverance, doing what you love and loving what you do. For instance, a person may be a passionate artist, and be very, very successful - and because he loves what he does, nothing feels like "work", let alone hard work. The implication that hard work alone creates success is where this motivational phrase falls short.

Motivational phrases that are based on one person's experience don't really work for the vast majority of successful people, if the author is one of those few who succeeded on the first try.

"Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose." - Bill Gates. While this is true on one level, the fact is that success is often built upon failures. It's very rare to find a person who succeeded on the first try! Most success stories involve a long history of failing, trying again, failing, trying again... until finally, there came success.

"Success is a steady progress toward one's goals." - Jim Rohn. Jim Rohn is also one of the great motivational and success coaches of our time. Sadly, this particular motivational phrase is a little off. Progress is rarely steady, and rarely linear. There are often setbacks and detours which make the path to success look more like a series of squiggly lines than a straight path with measurable milestones. The intent of this quote was probably "persistent progress". It's all in the wording!

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes anything, even nature." - John D. Rockefeller. Yes, perseverance is very important. But here's the problem with perseverance - are we always certain we're persevering in the right direction, toward our goals? We might be particularly good at doing something, but inadvertently be moving in the opposite direction!

"The secret of success is to know something nobody else knows." - Aristotle Onassis. This is yet another motivational quote that only looks at one aspect of achievement, and discounts opportunity, perseverance, drive and enthusiasm, among others.

The problem with many motivational phrases is that they focus on one single aspect of something as multi-faceted as success. This is why many fall short. Then there are the tongue-in-cheek, such as W.C. Fields' "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it." These quotes remind us that we are human.

To help set you in the right direction, take a look at this great selection of motivational phrases.
